Pick the right AI for the writing in front of you

Every major model — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, Copilot — defaults to a slightly different voice. ChatGPT tends toward hedged and structured. Claude leans warm and explanatory. Gemini favors clean and direct. Perplexity is research-flavored and citation-heavy. Grok is loose and willing to take a position. Copilot is workplace-cautious. Match the model to the work and the humanizing prompt has less ground to cover.

If you're new here, the fast path: pick the provider you already pay for, paste the generated prompt into custom instructions, and use it for a week. If the output still feels off, switch providers rather than re-tuning the prompt. Different models respond to different kinds of guidance; some prompts that fall flat on one model sing on another.

What each provider does best (and where it stumbles)

ChatGPT

Most predictable. Best documentation, deepest plugin ecosystem, easiest to get a 'good enough' result fast.

Day-to-day writing, structured tasks, anything with a process to follow. Stumbles on creative flair and personality.

Claude

Best at long-form, nuanced writing. Warmer default voice. Strong at editing and explanation.

Essays, briefs, anything where tone matters as much as content. Stumbles on rigid templates.

Gemini

Cleanest, most direct prose. Tight integration with Google Workspace if you live in Docs.

Short-form writing, summaries, structured outputs. Stumbles on long, atmospheric prose.

Perplexity

Research-first. Cites sources by default. Best when you want the AI to look something up and write about it.

Research summaries, market scans, factual writing with sources. Stumbles on pure creative writing.

Grok

Willing to take a position. Looser voice. Better for opinion pieces than for measured analysis.

Opinionated writing, social posts, anything with personality. Stumbles on neutral, formal output.

Copilot

Microsoft 365 native. Best for working inside Word, Outlook, Teams. Slightly more conservative voice.

Email, meeting summaries, in-document edits. Stumbles outside the Microsoft ecosystem.

Still not sure? Two-question shortcut

First: where do you do most of the writing? If it's Docs, start with Gemini. If it's Word or Outlook, start with Copilot. If it's a browser tab, ChatGPT or Claude. Second: how much does voice matter vs. structure? More voice → Claude. More structure → ChatGPT. Equal weight on both → run the same task on both for a week and keep the one whose output you edit less.
